Medical Terminology Health Paper for June Week 1

Go Red For Women

American Heart Association developed “Go Red For Women” in 2004 because it claims more women’s lives every year due to heart disease, stroke, and other cardiovascular diseases. The movement aims to educate women about healthy eating, exercise, risk factor reduction, smoking, weight maintenance, blood pressure control, and blood cholesterol management. Red is the main word for the slogan because it is bright bold and a vibrant color which helps capture the energy, passion and intelligence of women to work hard and fight heart disease. The red dress is the national symbol referring to women and getting awareness out in the public eye for women to love their heart. Go Red empowers women with the knowledge and tools they need to take positive action to reduce their risks of heart disease and stroke and protect their health. By spreading the word more people become aware and involved and take action against the disease although they may have a family medical history. Honestly, I never knew of the effort to raise awareness until this year, that I was crowned Mrs. New Mexico International because it is the pageants partner making it our national platform. I have learned so much from “Go Red For Women” especially since cardiovascular disease and stroke run in my family due to both my grandmothers passing away. Heart disease, stroke, and cardiovascular disease are more common in women than men. Did you know cardiovascular disease kills over 500,000 women each year and about one woman every minute? I have learned that 62% of white women were aware that heart disease being the leading cause of death, 38% of African Americans and 34% of Hispanics has had the same level of awareness. The awareness is being spread nationally through sponsors like Wheel of Fortune, Today on NBC, Macy’s Department Stores, Access Hollywood, Minnesota Monthly, Merck, WNBA, Campbell Soup Company, Jiffy Lube, Ocean Spray, Party City and so much more. Go Red targets the entire female audience no matter your age because there are always ways to promote a healthy heart. Actress Jennie Garth, who is the Go Red For Women spokesperson and also singer Toni Braxton, speaks out on behalf of the organization telling women to fight for their life, get checked, and seek information on how to fight for life. These women are trying to get women to see the reality in front of them and see the number one women killing disease is! I think that this is one of the greatest organizations just about women for women. It allows individuals to take charge of their life and do whatever they want with the information but not say they were not warned or briefed on the topic at hand. The woman in the advertisement page is smiling with her hands on her chest with a red shirt showing that she cares about her life. By taking five minutes of your time out of your life you too can make a difference in you and society.
